About Mrs. Petersen
Welcome! My name is Megan Petersen, and I am the art facilitator at Freedom Elementary in Harrisburg, South Dakota. I'm a Minnesota native, but attended college at Augustana University in Sioux Falls and have been here ever since! With our two cats, my husband and I live in downtown Sioux Falls. My husband and I love the outdoors and are always seeking out our next great adventure, whether that be by train, plane, car, or even canoe! We were lucky enough to have spent a few weeks of our summer wandering through Italy and Switzerland! Some of my favorite things are cooking, hiking and exploring, hanging out with friends and family, and making art!
This fall I will be embarking on my sixth year of teaching! I'm so thrilled to be doing what I love every single day. My students never cease to amaze me with their creative ideas! As a facilitator, I am passionate about creating a caring and supportive environment where my students' creative growth can flourish. I hope that through my art program, learners become inquisitive, thoughtful, and curious thinkers as they observe and experience the world around them.
My mission is to create a space where mistakes are celebrated, discoveries are made through play and exploration, and where learners feel safe to express their ideas in a way that is authentic and meaningful. I value process over product, and the independent growth that occurs when students take charge of their learning.
As we prepare our children for future success in life, I believe it is more important than ever for our children to be honing their critical thinking skills. Regardless of whether our students pursue a career in the arts, an arts education is a vital part in helping to teach our students important skills that will make them successful in any venture they may choose.
